Who We Are

Tenant Protections Guide is an independent educational platform dedicated to making tenant rights information accessible to everyone. We are not a law firm, government agency, or legal aid organization — we are educators who believe that understanding your rights is the first step toward resolving housing issues.

Our content is researched and written using primary legal sources including federal and state statutes, government publications, and established legal reference materials. We are committed to accuracy, transparency, and providing genuinely helpful information to renters across all 50 states.

How We Research and Review Content

Every guide on Tenant Protections Guide is built from primary legal sources — federal statutes, state codes, and official government publications. We cross-reference our content against HUD guidance documents, state attorney general publications, and established legal reference sources like Nolo and LawHelp.org.

Our editorial process requires that each guide cite specific statute section numbers (such as the Fair Housing Act, 42 U.S.C. § 3604) rather than making unsupported general claims. We also run a mechanical check against every citation in our state-statute corpus, confirming that the linked source loads and that it actually contains the section we cite. As of this build, 80 of 442 citations carry a passing result from a check against freshly fetched source text. Of those, 22 have been read against the source by a human reviewer and bound to a stored copy of the text that was checked. The rest we have not confirmed: for some, the check ran and the source did not show the section we cite; others we could not reach at all; the remainder are queued for review. Not confirmed does not mean wrong — it means we have not yet proved it, and every page tells you which of these applies to each statute it cites. Federal statutes, the Uniform Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (a model act, not federal law), and agency regulations are cited on this site where relevant but sit outside this state-statute corpus.

For the plain-language summary and key-rule text on each state page, we go further where we can: 367 of 899 of those fields carry a specific quote from the cited statute, read by a human reviewer against the source text. The rest have not been checked this way yet. We say so here instead of leaving it to guesswork.

One thing we do not and cannot claim: that a statute is still current, unamended law. Confirming that requires a paid legal citator subscription — the kind law firms use — and we do not have one. A passing check on this site means the cited section was present and readable as of the date it was checked. It does not mean the legislature has not amended it since. We re-run our reachability check on a monthly schedule, which catches a dead link or a renumbered section. It does not detect an amendment to the underlying law.
